QSIL invests 20 million euros in new production buildings and melting facilities at Ilmenau site.

Laying of the foundation stone for quartz melting hall 3 in Ilmenau

21 July 2023 − Investment in the future: The group of companies specialising in high-performance materials for the semiconductor industry celebrated another milestone in the company’s history on 21 July 2023 with the laying of the foundation stone for the “Quarzschmelze 3” production building.

QSIL grows and grows and grows. The globally active “hidden champion” with roots in the Thuringian Forest is expanding its production capacities at its headquarters in Ilmenau. The company is thus responding to the growing global demand from the semiconductor industry for high-purity quartz glass.

The new production building offers space for more so-called billet melters of the latest generation. QSIL manufactures hollow cylindrical fused quartz products in the unique electrical plasma melting procedure, which are later delivered to customers in custom dimensions. Due to the unique combination of special properties, high-purity fused silica from QSIL is widely used in the semiconductor industry, specialized engineering, analytics, specialty light source industry and fiber optic applications.

In addition to the melters, the new building will also house machinery for further processing of the melted products as well as logistics for technical components and raw materials. In addition, new offices and a break room will also be built in the new building.

In total, QSIL is investing around 10 million euros in the building and special infrastructure for the expansion, as well as around 10 million euros in machinery. The investment also marks the end of the project “Expansion of production capacity at the Ilmenau site”, which is supported by the Thüringer Aufbaubank as part of the joint task for the promotion of the regional economic structure. In the course of the expansion, QSIL has already increased its staff in the past and adapted it to the new conditions. The company employs around 250 people at its main plant in Ilmenau.
